» Biography / Interview:
What is your name and how old are you?
My name is Brett "Stumpy" Mason and I am 32 years old.
Where do you live?
I live in Brisbane, Australia but I originally grew up in Melbourne. I moved up north for the weather and the laid back scene, it was hard in Melbourne with all the rain and depressed people, but now I got the easy life.
How long have you been riding BMX for?
I have been riding BMX for about 22 years.
This covers almost every aspect of freestyle, from street, ramps and flat. But I have been riding flat for about 18 years non-stop, with exceptions from injury, alcohol, girls and computer games.
Why do you ride BMX?
I ride for the pure enjoyment of freedom and creativity and the fact that chicks dig it too. I started riding cause I wasn't into team sports like footy or knitting, and it seemed like a good way to hurt myself, over and over and over again. Now I ride to inspire, entertain, keep out of trouble, bedazzle, annoy and fill in time, the bottom line is I still ride and love it.
What is your favorite type of riding?
My favorite type of riding is on a bike, preferably a KHE, but usually anything with two wheels. I do enjoy days of rolling around on one wheel, either front or back, no biggie, but as long as I'm rolling and not flat on my ass then its all good. Seriously though flatland is the shit and if it wasn't for it, we wouldn't be where we are at now.
Who are your favorite riders?
My favorite riders are the ones that I've spent time with over the span of my life. Australia represents with such no names as Nick Watts, Trev King, Dave Scott, Waif & Hodgee, Glenn Bastion, Alan Woo, Thrasher, Matt Holmes, Kym Fielke, Chris Pollack, SimonOB, Spewie Stu Stu, Moooooore, Dighton and my mentor Tony Newton. International guests include Alex Jamilin, Akira Okumura, York Ono, Takashi Ito, Kobiyachhi, Matti Rose, Parris Wakaru, Mike-S, Dave Osato (Good flatlander) and the ever loving Jesse Puente.
Who do you ride with?
I ride with the kids at the local car park, who don't mind me touching them, Stu-John Munro, Chris Moore, Tony Newton and Ronnie. I also ride with Ben McAninly, Fen-diddle-endle, Rich Doggie and The Ash-Master-2000, and not to forget my girl, Fiona who gets to ride me whenever she likes.
What is your best trick?
Falling off and getting flattened in front of my friends and peers, I cant avoid hurting myself but there must be a trick to doing it front of people I look up to. My best of best trick would have to be some kind of death truck thing where I end up in a blender, that or some bar flip thing whilst rolling. You decide!!
What is your favorite trick?
My favorite trick is rolling links, like jugglers or crack packer whips where you go in left and come out right side then around the back again. Yeah, that trick, I think its called a daffodil or something, that's the one.
What are your goals in the future?
My goal is to live, and please myself over others. Not in a sexual way, but to exceed my expectations I have put on myself. I hope to go to the worlds some time, and to do a Europe trip, but that can all wait till I win the lotto.
Favorite riding spot?
That's a tuff one. Roma Street parklands and Wembly Park are my local handouts, but in Sydney, St. Mary's cathedral is real nice, and the city center of Melbourne is also a dope place to lay down some moves.
What do you do when you are not riding?
I usually like to rock the tropical at all times, play on computers, or x-box, and listen to music. Hip hop is the shit when it comes to riding, it puts a rhythm in your step and hypes me, so I like to drop rhymes every now and then too. I also am a socialite and partake in the occasional snifter of alcohol in the evenings, which means I'm a hopeless drunk who is anyone's once I'm under the influence. I also paint and do some graffiti, but don't tell the cops that!
Any tips to people starting out riding?
Yeah, just do it for yourself, not to impress some mate or girl, but to know that you can do something that 98% of the population has no
conception about. It took a lot of falls to get where I am now and I'm gonna have a shit load more before I'm over, so keep that in your head. You just gotta keep getting back up or you'll end up hating yourself for the rest of your life and end up killing all your friends in a selfish rampage of death. But most importantly you got to know that practice does make perfect, even if it doesn't seem like it, it does.
The thanks part
For all the bikes yall sent me over the years I would like to thank Thomas and Wolfgang for all the support. I'd like to thank Rod and Daz from Supersports for the recent comradeship. I have to thank Shane Nunn, and the rest of the crew at Puma Australia who have kept me clothed and fed for a long time now. Also Matt Holmes and Mike Daly at 2020bmx magazine for the continuing support of flatland in Australia, and all the crew over the years who have helped me out. My friends Ben, Fendl, Blair, Brenno, Mick, Ash, Richo and Damo for the help and constructive criticism.
Any Last Words?
Yep, I must thank my Mum and Gran (Gloria and Ivy) for the countless trips to the hospital and for being my sponsor for so many years. My sis Jen for being there, my Dad (Herb) for not, and Stu for being that little devil on my shoulder telling me what to do. I would also like to thank my close group of friends that support me with whatever I do, regardless if its right or not. Thanks.
